Commercial Playground Shipping 101

Big Projects, Big Questions About Shipping

Big projects like planning a new playground bring up a lot of questions. One of the most frequently asked questions our sales reps receive is about shipping. Since commercial playground equipment doesn't ship like a typical small package, it's completely understandable to want all the details upfront.

Noah's is here to walk you through the process from start to finish, so you know exactly what to expect when it comes to:

  • Playground shipping timelines
  • Freight
  • Delivery Day

Typical Playground Shipping Timelines (and Why They Take More Time)

Playground projects take time to manufacture and ship. Industry standards typically range from 12-14 weeks. While that may seem like a long time, it helps to understand why. Manufacturing lead times are the primary reason for extended shipping timelines. Other factors can include:

  • Size and complexity of the pieces
  • Customized playground designs
  • Seasonal demand

To get a general idea of lead times, check the product page on Noah's website. For the most accurate and up to date information, give us a call!

What "Quick Ship" Really Means and How Fast It Can Be

If you're working within a strict timeline, exploring Noah's Quick Ship playground options may be a smart move. Look for products marked with the Quick Ship icon on the product page. Our Quick Ship line includes select products that are kept in stock by the manufacturer. Typical Quick Ship timelines vary by product and usually range from

  • 5-10 days
  • 1-2 weeks
  • Occasionally 3-4 weeks

Quick Ship playground structures are offered in pre selected color schemes. Limiting customization helps keep production times shorter and shipping faster.

How Playground Equipment Ships

Playground equipment is large and bulky, so it ships differently than standard packages. About 95% of playground components ship via freight, while smaller items like swing seats may ship UPS Ground.

To prepare for a large delivery, here's what you can typically expect:

  • Large, open air crates
  • Average rate length of approximately 14 feet
  • Delivery on an 18-wheeler
  • Larger structures arriving palletized or in oversized crates

How Freight Charges Are Determined

Noah's sales reps will make sure you understand freight charges during the planning and quoting process. They'll also work with multiple carriers to secure the best available rates. Freight is typically palletized and transported on semi-trucks or trailers. Pallet sizes can range from:

  • Standard 4' x 4' x 4 pallets
  • Oversized pallets up to 8-16 feet long

Preparing for Delivery Day (Before the Truck Arrives)

Before your order arrives, proper preparation is key. First, confirm your delivery location type, whether it's a school, park, church, neighborhood site (which may not have a loading dock), or a warehouse. Determine whether a full-size truckload or LTL (less-than-truckload) delivery is required. Then coordinate the necessary equipment and services ahead of time, such as:

  • Lift gates
  • Forklifts
  • Dock delivery access
  • Call-ahead notifications

Delivery Day: What to Expect

The day you've been waiting for is finally here! Now what? It's important to know that the delivery driver can only move freight to the tailgate of the truck. Offloading the shipment is the customer's responsibility. Lift gates can make unloading easier but must be arranged in advance. Warehouses with loading docks are ideal for delivery for delivery, but don't worry. Noah's will help you plan for the smoothest delivery possible.

Free Shipping Options

If you're looking to save room in your budget, shopping Noah's select free shipping products may help. Look for the free shipping icon on the website. These products are available through pre-arranged manufacturer programs and typically do not include additional services like lift gates or special delivery changes.

Shipping to Multiple Locations

Noah's can also coordinate shipments to multiple locations. This is ideal for school districts installing playgrounds at multiple sites or developers building in several neighborhoods. While shipping to multiple locations may increase overall costs, warehouse deliveries tend to be the most cost-effective. Direct to site deliveries often carry higher freight rates.
