Our state and surrounding ones are dealing with the aftermath of a two day severe winter storm which left everything covered in several inches of snow and ice. From an industry standpoint, we would recommend you check your park or playground equipment following any harsh weather conditions. It's always best to have maintenance crews check all playground equipment at least a couple of times per year. Have them check connecting points on your playground equipment which is bolted or joined to another unit of the playground equipment. Look for anything that is protruding, even small bolts which usually are flush with the surface, but due to extreme weather conditions might have become loose, could catch a child's clothing or drawstrings.
Ice can also cause damage to metal or plastic components of your commercial playground equipment. Many playground structures have fun roof tops which can shade the sun from melting frozen surfaces. Be sure all ice has melted from your playground equipment before allowing children access.
Probably the most overlooked item which is affected by wet, extreme temperatures is any type of loose-fill playground surfacing, commonly known as wood fiber or wood mulch. Loose-fill surfacing can compact several inches due to icy, wet conditions, or even run off into lower lying areas if not contained by playground borders or curbing. Make it a habit to check surfacing at least a couple of times a year to insure level are compliant with all ASTM fall attenuation standards.
